How is preventing deforestation less impactful than planting new trees? If you plant a million seedlings but then giant swaths of forest get cut down while you're busy planting, its hard to say you made the biggest impact.
In science the boring solution is often most effective.

I think the bigger problem is that eventually you just run out of deforestation to stop, but there's still net carbon emmissions

Carbon offsets like any financial instrument require proper due diligence, there are a variety of ways they are produced and to different standards. Think of them having credit ratings, some like you pointed out have questionable impact others are much more credible.

Clearly FTX isn't just planning on green washing otherwise why not just buy dirt cheap offsets and call it a day. Good to see a variety of initiatives and projects happening.
