How is preventing deforestation less impactful than planting new trees? If you plant a million seedlings but then giant swaths of forest get cut down while you're busy planting, its hard to say you made the biggest impact.
In science the boring solution is often most effective.

I think the bigger problem is that eventually you just run out of deforestation to stop, but there's still net carbon emmissions
I think an extremely easy target is the work to be done preventing permafrost thaw. The amount of CO2 locked in permafrost that just seeps out as the north loses its hat is horrific.
Very little money being spent on it because it's not "sexy" and big oil wants in.

I tend to agree, old growth and virgin forests contain magnitudes of more carbon than the trees that sit on top of them... And can sequester more carbon than a newly planted forest
Something to consider...still any efforts better than no effort
