was able to dodge that bullet with a high degree of zen, but feeling like i shouldn't have funds on there, and maybe not even Binance?

1) You're not being paranoid!
2) Binance isn't really in the same category
3) Big difference between legal trouble for founders, and random users losing funds; think one is way more likely than the other
yea i guess CPC isnt interested in screwing over Huobi users any more than it is randomly screwing over AntFinancial users.
but if there is a trend starting, and crypto continues going crazy, maybe some new weird stuff can be happening

Why isn't Binance in the same category? Curious to know

cz is in singapore and i dont think will ever go back to the mainland, so binance in general is more "global" even though it's heavily chinese in ownership and operations
