If it can be hidden, then on a side is ok, otherwise it wastes horizontal space. it is quick enough to scroll to top and click.

Horizontal worked when you only had a few listed pairs. Until the day they invent a sideways scroll on the mouse, I suggest switching to vertical.

On desktop a sidebar probably makes more sense but on mobile you have to think of a different UI pattern. Coinbase Pro has a well thought out solution for this (on mobile web, not in the app).
