Current status: getting documents notarized. Lawyers are having a spirited argument in Chinese around me about whether I’m Sam or Samuel, and what a middle name is. Next step is to teach the Turkish consulate what a hyphenated last name is.

My favorite part of KYC is when you lived in the U.S. for 1 year+ and thus need a record of not having a criminal record with the FBI produced by their HQ in Virginia. All correspondence is done using post and cheques.

In Japan you'd have to go to the prefectural HQ. They would tell you they can't make copies of [obscure paperwork you don't have] for you. Then when you return, you'll wait for someone to FAX IT for you. She's 98. Her only job is faxing things. She doesn't know how a fax works.
