@Ryanair checked in yesterday and showed no two seats together unless you pay more... both of us now sat in different places with 2 empty seats either side! A glitch, or pirates of the air? Err...
Hi Karl, seats are allocated at random at the time of check-in, therefore we cannot guarantee you will be seated together unless you choose to sit together at the time of booking. AR

They're not 'random' though are they. It's designed to make money out of people who unsurprisingly want to sit with the person they're travelling with.

Completely agree. Just checked in my wife is seated in row7 , my daughter in row21 and I'm in row32. There are plenty of seats where we can sit together. Absolute con. No other airline does this.
