I listened to the same & thought his answer was plausible - after all it's their plane & their rules 
It was the 50+ million to 1 odds calculated by the uni prof of stats against 4 isolated seats on 2 separate flights that convinced me
It's almost certain that random seats will be separate cos reserved seat pax prefer window and aisle seats
