To be fair, the train will probably take them closer than 50 miles from their required destination and not charge them a tenner to use the toilets!

How are you being fair with that? nobody is charged to use the toilets, and you book the airport you want to go to, nobody forces you to pick a cheap flight that lands in cheaper airports, so quit whining and Pay to fly to the airport you want.

Nope. TGV trains go about 300 km/h but they need dedicated rail for that. On classic rail speeds are limited. But within certain ranges the train is indeed quicker. That's why the French government tries to ban short domestic flights for which there is a TGV alternative.
