My fundamental issue with being on call is that I care more about my personal life & health than I do about whether my employer’s website is operational.
I assume everyone does! So...why do we put up with on-call at all?
Maybe there’s something to this labor solidarity thing

Call can suck, but it's necessary for some companies. It is important to spread the load and, if possible, have remote teammates where you have 24 hour coverage.

I think it’s worth asking WHY it’s necessary though. Like, specifically - with dollar amounts that will be lost, or the names of the big customers who will leave, or whatever. We don’t examine why we do it closely enough. Those tradeoffs need to be explicit.

In our case, our business is hosting thousands of websites over the world. Some of these businesses are 100% dependent on their sites being up. Reliability is critical to our business survival, issues need to be addressed as they arise.

Our management team explained why it was really important for us to have a 24 hour presence, because researchers work all hours, etc. We responded that they were free to pay people to work alternate hours -- either the same people somehow if willing, or new positions.
