The Suburbs, a thread: Low density suburbs were idealized after WWII through massive federal subsidies that dwarf today’s housing subsidies. Simultaneously, urban cores were gutted, hollowed out & rebranded as horrible places only for racial minorities. See images

Replying to @zsbradt
A. I live in the suburbs — intentionally to avoid the density of urban environments B. Photo is being used to show size/scale of permitted “ADUs,” which as you point out, are actually more akin to second houses

I DMed someone who was trolling me about housing/homelessness. Sent 820 words, very polite and graciously written, addressing every issue she’d brought up in a humble, thoughtful & organized way, and offered to listen to any suggestions. She blocked me as soon as she’d read it.

Bravo. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Here is an example of CEQA being used against student housing, in this case, 2,000 homes for UCSD students: lajollalight.com/news/story/202

This should never happen — never. California’s profound lack of student housing is a moral failure. Last year I authored a new law to allow UC, CSU & community colleges to get student housing approved faster (without CEQA). We’ve also put additional funding into the budget. twitter.com/dillonliam/sta…

If you wonder why I’m so aggressively #YIMBY, this is my home town. A place where nearly every well off person owes their success to the university and early developments surrounding it, while ferociously depriving younger generations of the same opportunities.

Awful story about UC Davis students camping out overnight in freezing weather to get in line to for a student housing lease for NEXT YEAR. And many of them didn't get it davisvanguard.org/2023/02/studen

It’s great to hear that housing will be a priority. There is vast difference between philanthropy that allows wealth to effectively solve real problem vs restricted donations that often make our biggest societal problems worse. Remember Jay Kahn & forget Conrad Prebys.

Babi Yar is the ravine where 34k Jews of Kyiv were massacred in two days. Before the war, controversy surrounded various gaudy memorial proposals, the oligarch funders & their vision on the site. The UA Choir shows that memorial isn’t about big budgets & famous artists…

SBF got out of jail on a $250 million bond using his parents' house. But it's a faculty home on-campus. They rent the land from Stanford. This isn't how it works for federal defendants who are not white and wealthy 75% are detained awaiting trial

She’s that neighbor who sees workers through the window and comes out to give them orders. 😂

FYi @MayorToddGloria @CM_Jencampbell: The weekend work crew in #D2 just left- without addressing the cracks/potholes just 50 ft. away I showed them I understand they have "work orders"-- but the reality is: The need is much greater than the "get it done" reports suggest. twitter.com/LoriSaldanaSD/…

Lori Saldaña barred me from replying to tweets. This is I think the fourth time she has done / undone this in the past two weeks. I assume the most recent version was so that she could cheer for a lawyer extracting fees out of assistance for families in need, without pushback.

To summarize, she is *proud* to have called an elected officially recovering from surgery at home to demand she fix the phone line at city hall.

Update: she reversed course, again. The second time she blocked and unblocked me, at least. Just can’t quit me. 😂 Was going to reply to her with corrections to her facts but decided to let her get further out over her skis for a while. Stay tuned. twitter.com/RyanClumpner/s…

So weird that the Twitter Files editors missed this instance of state power being used to pressure the social-media platform

Lori blocked me from replying to her. I guess she got tired of me asking if she supports Permanent Supportive Housing in her neighborhood. (She doesn’t. Classic NIMBY.)

Homelessness is a housing issue. This further underscores that we need to be producing more housing, at every price point, in every neighborhood in San Diego. We cannot wait for affordable housing projects to get us out of this mess.

These arguments are widely debunked by economists and virtually all all national experts on the subject of homelessness. It flies in the face basic logic, current local and national data. Not fit for print. Housing solves homelessness.

Important story. Thoughts: 1) How much easier this path would be for unhoused folks if we had adequate housing inventory. Market rate housing is directly connected. 2) PSH is a triage solution, essential for high-need cases. 3) homelessness is largely economic, NOT “drugs.”
