Perhaps having national monopolies for pharmaceuticals is a bad idea.

Do you really not grasp that no one can profitably operate under these conditions or is this a troll?

Who's going to set up a shop providing medicine if they aren't making profit from it, you?

I am from Germany (here 30 yrs) & health costs & prescriptions are taken care of by the Government. Pharmaceutical entities are not privately owned, no jacked up prices. You can be healthy, without having to be rich. Hospital stays are not outrageous, because every bill is paid.

It is (or at least can be) free at the point of service, which allows everyone to seek the treatment they need and let's the price of those treatments be fairly distributed. That's the whole premise of insurance, but without prioritizing the profit motive to deny care.

Hospitals in America are so expensive because when you do pay, you have to pay for all the people that aren't paying their bill and that's what they jack up the prices so much. To cover their costs.

This could be a factor (and one that would be solved by single payor anyway) but every cent of profit and unnecessary administrative expenses, for insurers and for providers and for vendors, is also money that contributes to the absurd prices.
