If you want to understand the IDW, think in terms of the IDW Protocol. (Thread)

Correction: “I was running a non profit creating thousands of jobs, realized that the scale of the problem was too big for the private sector, asked politicians what they were going to do, and was told ‘nothing, unless you get the American people to make us,’ so here we are”

It never ceases to amaze me how many people can’t tell the difference between a descriptive and a normative claim.

Benjamin is correct in noting that that a naive approach to cancelling student debt is Pollyannish. My only addition would be that the collective student debt of our population is so burdensome that we're going to have a reckoning one way or another.

let me know if I’ve got you right in a big picture sense: You want employee productivity more aligned to reward (either via salary or dividend). By rough analogy, this would entail a shift towards something resembling worker owned co-ops. Am I close, or way off?

David does something great here. Even though he’s skeptical of the apocalyptic nature of the problem (questioning rates of adoption, assuming natural buffering feedback), he still posits some approaches to mitigating the inevitable challenges...

Once upon a time, I remember Bernie bragging about never running negative campaign ads... Sorry to see that principle die.

This has been my growing unease with ... aligning these incentives is a delicate task, and I applaud anyone who would take it on, but it absolutely can’t be taken lightly

This is a great example of one of those questions that’s totally cool to ask a new friend in a social setting but obnoxious to seek out a stranger to ask.

Back to UBI vs Job guarantee... UBI provides security upfront, allowing us to pursue meaningful work on our own terms. Job guarantees do the inverse, they promise us a seat to fill for a role that we’d never choose for ourselves

The first is easily automated, the latter not so much. Top down mechanisms kill the inspiration needed for the work that actually provides meaning.

For the first, money provides the only justification... you pay me more, and I become more willing to grind through it. For the latter, money cheapens it; payment becomes a weight, obligating me to twist my natural motivation to serve the needs of whomever is signing the check

The first is menial, repetitive, and boring. The latter is inspiring, novel, and challenging. It’s interesting what money does to those types of work
