At #cosit2019, Brandon Plewe just gave an interesting talk on distinguishing between masses and objects. My vision science friends familiar with similar discussions about stuff vs. things, texture or material vs. objects would be amused.
One good rule I haven't heard before is that for mass we don't care about boundary, EG boundary does not affect our identification of the mass, but does affect id of an object. Vision science has been a bit bound to this idea because we care so much about texture segmentation.

I've wondered for a long time whether or not segmentation is something the visual system actually does (at least to the degree that we worry about it!). Sounds like a good talk.
