One good rule I haven't heard before is that for mass we don't care about boundary, EG boundary does not affect our identification of the mass, but does affect id of an object. Vision science has been a bit bound to this idea because we care so much about texture segmentation.

Boundary can affect interpretation of material identity, though. Vision science would suggest adding the notion that with texture/mass we don't care much about the configuration of parts. But jumble the parts for an object (EG a face), and you have a different kind of object.

Well that talk was well done - as we circumvent "masses" with field or object (aggregations of objects) models.
