We experience a rich visual world. However, experiments often demonstrate that we lack the details. How can we make sense of this puzzle, and if we're so bad at the details, how does vision work as well as it does? A new theory:

Hi, Twitterverse: We want to run an experiment in MATLAB, in which the subject will respond with a Chinese character. Any idea how to do this? Anyone have code?

    Blind, not bound

Boundary can affect interpretation of material identity, though. Vision science would suggest adding the notion that with texture/mass we don't care much about the configuration of parts. But jumble the parts for an object (EG a face), and you have a different kind of object.

One good rule I haven't heard before is that for mass we don't care about boundary, EG boundary does not affect our identification of the mass, but does affect id of an object. Vision science has been a bit bound to this idea because we care so much about texture segmentation.

At , Brandon Plewe just gave an interesting talk on distinguishing between masses and objects. My vision science friends familiar with similar discussions about stuff vs. things, texture or material vs. objects would be amused.

And MIT News just wrote about the paper @RosenholtzRuth and I just had in JEP:General. Here’s the paper:

Our new paper reviewing crowding (poor peripheral vision when there's clutter). There's a "simple" model, and lots of experimental results suggesting that the story is not so simple. Has the simple model been disproven... or not?

Let's talk about peeing in space. Several people, in response to my NY Times essay, have said that women couldn't go into space because we lacked the technology for them to pee in space.

Why, Twitter, why? I follow only science stuff on this account, and you show me ads for learning astrology and palm reading.

Signed up for this new account, followed a bunch of scientists, NASA, etc. Why the heck is Twitter suggesting I also follow Justin Bieber??
