  And they were mostly victims of poor (non existing) military leadership, percicution of secret police or then just killed for fun by soviet authorities.

  Which was definitely due in fact by several factors 1) the purge of officers in the armed forces placing lesser quality officers in charge 2) Stalin’s taking command of armed forces lead to disaster in the early period of the war. 3) poorly equipped and trained troops.
