The money invested in temporary, and most likely ineffective, measures to keep schools open could be used to permanently bolster broadband...failing to accept the long term impact of Ovid is wasting a lot of money.
Yes virtual learning is different and challenging. It's hard for Rural communities like my district to handle it because we lack high speed internet required for distance learning. Hey. Retired teacher of 28 years here. Homeschooling is not difficult. It does not require internet. I homeschooled two kids, used the same Mcgraw Edison books as school, got involved with area groups and went somewhere at least 3x per week with our group.

Many parents are not literate themselves (I speak as an RN who spent 31 years doing patient teaching& quickly learned many of my patients/families did not read).Plus many parents have to work.Making kids to go to school during a pandemic is wrong,but we need good alternatives.

I work at a college that had no online learning. Our's probably wasn't great at the end of our semester. However, we've worked non-stop planning for all scenarios, bought new software, sent hot spots to students with connectivity issues, etc. We didn't just hope the virus away.

Also many kids get the majority of their nutrition from free BF and lunch at school. The USA has failed economic policies under both Repubs & Democrats. Kids should not be forced to go to school, but we need to make sure they're getting enough to eat.

Succinctly put. It might not be easy, but our gov’t has forced this hand. By ignoring a pandemic they’ve made it unsafe to go to school.
