People are surprised that during the New Deal, FDR invested ~40% of America's GDP to beat the great depression. It was the largest economic stimulus package for working Americans, and saw ~12% economic growth. Bernie Sanders' Green New Deal is a modern economic stimulus package.

Also important to note that FDR’s detractors said the same things that Bernie’s detractors say now—his ideas were unreasonable. Even the proposal to transform of our manufacturing industry for the war effort was derided as impossible. We actually ended up exceeding expectations.

And the New Deal still wasn’t nearly big enough. The Depression lasted until the stimulus of wartime spending dwarfed the New Deal. Unfortunately, this time the looming foe isn’t as obvious as Hitler, though potentially more deadly.
