As a 1st generation Mexican American speaking Spanish in the home growing up was the ONLY option. We're doing the same with our 3 girls and hope they do the same with their children.

That’s an option for today because now the population has political and cultural capital. Wasn’t an option for those who migrated (or were conquered) pre 1930, and their descendants.

My Grandmother was hit for speaking Spanish she only taught my dad limited amounts, my dad was told in school not to speak Spanish, my dad did not teach me Spanish. I only have like 3rd grade level comprehension. My family came to NM with Juan De Oñate (Ortiz/Archuleta).

When my daughter was in elem school, her best friend’s mom was from Las Vegas NM. She is Hispanic. She finally went to Grad School at UNM to learn Spanish. She now has a PhD and teaches Spanish there.

I had Latino classmates in my honors Spanish 1,Spanish 2 and AP/honors Spanish 3 classes in high school in South-Central LA 40 years ago. They didn't grow up speaking Spanish at home. Plus they got dissed for mingling with us black kids at lunch. And they struggled in class too.

Yeah. I know a Spanish professor who is a heritage speaker, and she still calls me for grammar help, even though I started learning Spanish when I was in my 30s!

Spanish was my first language. Learned English in elementary school which was bilingual. As family has assimilated, Spanish is used less. My youngest cousins don’t speak any Spanish. Spanglish at best
