As a New Mexican with Native and Spanish lineage, this is a hard one to deal with. Both bloodlines are not present in my memory or my parents. Lots of New Mexicans are trying to grasp onto some identity.

I think what’s left is the food, broken bits of the Spanish language, and stories we learn in 8th and 10th grade New Mexico history.

One song comes to mind with all of this upheaval and chaos of hating on our nation's history: Cat Stevens "Father and Son". Pandering to the youngest generations may result in history repeating itself once the bad reminders are removed from the American landscape.

Conspiracy theorists thrive on "Prove it really happened the way you say it did". After all of the reminders of the Confederate War and slavery are gone, and everything is renamed - a hundred years from now will future generations really believe that we fought a Civil War?

If they are named after Union heroes, maybe. It's possible with Confederate monuments still around some may assume the South won the war. Did they?
