The emormous Equestian statue in #ElPaso that depicts Spanish conquistador Don Juan de Oñate was vandalized this week. Part of the ongoing trend worldwide to deface or remove statues of controversial historical figures. Crews cleaned red paint and graffiti off base of monument. pic.twitter.com/OE3qv1Zg4a

Was that #ANTIFA spray-painted on the statue? I think we're seeing that organization having a lot of folks belonging to it - including some Native Americans and those who believe all southern statues are affiliated with slavery.

No evidence of #ANTIFA is involved in anything anywhere just like "Communists" nor "anarchists" weren't involved in planning the riots of the 1960s and 1970s.

This isn't Don Juan's first time in the barrel. His statue in Alcalde, NM had its foot removed about 20 years ago. He ordered the massacre at the Acoma Pueblo, and enslaved men taken prisoner. Having your statue vandalized is minor payback.

Foot is important symbolism, since Onate cut body parts, mostly feet, off men at Acoma.

I don't know what kind of information is on the statue itself, but statues may need to have a long historical narrative posted where they exist so folks are educated about what and who they were. We have some very dumb folks who hate to do their homework about U.S. history.
