Lit nerds: what Brown characters, the more obscure the better, have you encountered "lurking" in American lit written by white authors? Curious. For example I'm thinking of the Brown characters in Steinbeck's stuff.
I also believed Bertha Mason aka the Mad Woman in the Attic in ‘Jane Erye’ was Latina. Also Caliban in Shakespeare’s Tempest was Native or mestizo.

Isn't this the character Jean Rhys makes her protagonist in Wide Sargasso Sea? She from the Caribbean, but not sure if from Spanish Caribbean.
