When I was an undergrad at the @UHouston I was lost, insecure and not sure what to study. Then @AndrewJMonzon introduced me to Tomas Rivera’s novela “...y no se lo tragó la tierra” or “...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him.” I saw myself for the 1st time in lit (1of15)pic.twitter.com/Gpl4804tsr

I put the book down. I couldn’t stop shaking over the passage of a migrant farmworker saying “When we arrive, when we arrive...the real truth is, I’m tired of arriving...” I hated writing before that moment. Then I read Nicholasa Mohr’s “El Bronx Remembered” (2of15)pic.twitter.com/1A6Wvx2k04

Rivera and Mohr woke me up. I didn’t even know I was asleep. They told me that we belonged in literature and I could accept other works on my own terms. Hungry for more, I grabbed Ana Castillo’s “So Far From God” next. I was speechless (3of15)pic.twitter.com/nlIB69Eg1q

I studied history and English with an eye on becoming a journalist. I only had three examples in Houston. Elma Berrera, the 1st Mex American reporter on Houston TV, @HoustonChron columnist Lori Rodriguez and Houston Post columnist Juan R. Paloma. They were rare even in 1994 (4)pic.twitter.com/QqUeHXpZsn

I wrote columns for my college newspaper and tried to mimic (very badly) another idol of mine: Molly Ivins. She was funny, witty and crafty. Everything I was not. (5of15)pic.twitter.com/zzSv6CW7yU

I also tried to mirror George Will and his writing about baseball. Loved his use of language. It was my language too (6of15)pic.twitter.com/ZhtzMDcOxk

As an MFA creative writing student at @ColumbiaSOA I came across “Family Installments: Memories of Growing Up Hispanic” by Edward Rivera. The memoir chronicles lives of 3 generations of a Puerto Rican family. He was a graduate of @ColumbiaSOA and opened door for me (7of15)pic.twitter.com/Ny1vIJfGyN

He was a mentor to writers Junot Diaz, Abraham Rodríguez and Ernesto Quiñonez. But I never got to meet Edward Rivera. He died a day before Sept 11, 2001. He is largely forgotten today (8of15)pic.twitter.com/Wa0RVUi4P7

While I was at @ColumbiaSOA I cofounded the grad group #OurWord mirrored after #NuestraPalabra in Houston. #OurWord host in 2001 the first reading on campus devoted to MFA writers of color. The annual event continues to this day. @mat_johnson @victorlavalle (9of15)pic.twitter.com/BURrd767Kt
