My mom was ‘negrita’ to her family and the treatment of her and her light-skinned sister was so different. But she was never ashamed of being dark despite it all — especially ‘cause she had way fewer wrinkles as she aged.

I got hated on by my family and the entire neighborhood for having fair skin and "good hair". Mom always said she loved me as I am.pic.twitter.com/SXiNheFNtH

I never had "the talk". I already knew about colorism just from seeing it in my own neighborhood, let alone my own family. I also read The Bluest Eye in college. Our. 98% black high school banned that book along with Sula and Song of Solomon because it was "offensive".

The book where you see yourself, and that someone is thinking about and writing about your life. As if the stars themselves had taken you in. Yeah.
