Without warning, New Mexico officials release student test results on Friday afternoon. New results show less than a third of all New Mexico students are proficient in reading and only about 1/5th are proficient in math. Meet the new results, same as the old results. But not for long! Also, standardized tests are blech. Watching my kid take those tests reinforced my belief that they tell us less than nothing. Thankfully, he is an intelligent, educated adult anyway.

What is standard about New Mexicans anyway?

Once my kid saw an ad insert from a pet store; there was an Igloo dog house. He saw it and said, 'look, an horno.' He would have flunked that question on a test.

Since it also is Roberto Mondragon's birthday, I'm thinking how much I would enjoy hearing him tell, one more time, the joke about the disoriented tourists who stop at a hamburger stand near Cuyamungue to ask where they are.

I wouldn't mind hearing him strum a few songs.

By the way, did the odd-timing of the tests results release have anything to do with the Karen Trujillo issues?

How many times in the last decade has New Mexico changed its "standardized" testing?

I’ve covered at least four since I’ve been on and off covering NM education since 2004. Next year will be the 5th. And many NM high school students still have to take remedial classes in college before being allowed to take undergrad classes

Kids do all over and the smart research is not to do remedial but regular classes with support. Great stuff out of UT Austin. Remedial classes are $$$ for colleges, another way to gouge parents IMO.

I taught a remedial college class here once. The students had a hard time with spelling and writing complete sentences. They were all NM high grads. After a semester with me, they were set.

I edited work from Ivy League graduates. Some of them were functionally illiterate and they had college degrees. Not from NM either!

Then it means NM is worse off. Our adult literacy rates are low.
