I don't think your assessment is fair. In 1866. R's were using federal power to impose equality on the Southern states in wake of civil war. Today, racial equality has largely been achieved under the law, Occasional personal discrimination and policy disagreements remain.
This is historically inaccurate. The Republicans were the liberals in Civil War America and the Dems were conservatives. GOP wanted more gov’t involvement (Reconstruction). Dems wanted feds to allow states to continue slavery.https://twitter.com/dineshdsouza/status/1018317979581341696 …
