Miserable day-mist, drizzle all day. Got the Long-billed Dowitcher after long search but only with Dave B's help. Tried Ludwell Valley for Green Sandpipers (neg) but got 11 Grey Wagtails in a 400m stretch of Northbrook. Unusual in that number together-migrants perhaps

Replacing plastic wrapping - the supermarkets are dragging their feet. Paper bags supplied for unboxed mushrooms so I used one for brussel sprouts - only plastic bags on that bit. Allegedly the paper bags are more expensive than plastic. Complain, complain & again.

Explored Ludwell Valley, got very wet but rewarded with 6 Green Sandpipers feeding in Northbrook; gave us an aerial display showing their white tail feathers It's a real green vein running thro' the southern part of Exeter to the river.

That's much more to my profile - no Cattle Egrets at Cockwood when I'm there but the flock was seen there later (and on our previous attempt!). Would be good to see the numbers reported (up to 28). They'll be quite common before too long.

Good day Wednesday; Broadsands - found a Black-necked Grebe close in and good views, not reported so far & quite late for this site. Also a Velvet Scoter after much scanning of the small Common flock-it was out on its own. With gentle swell could really see the white neck spot.

Cloud burst last night - luckily only short time. Green Woodpecker on lawn & G.S.Woodpecker on feeder today - first time for months with GSW in garden. Lack of finches

On a wet & blustery morning, my first Purple Sandpiper of the autumn on Maer Rocks but no success trying to spot a Skua amongst all the gulls. 3 Gannets

At merely the second attempt - good views of the Long-billed Dowitcher at Bowling Green Marsh, right in front of the hide. First since 2007. At high tide, hundreds of wildfowl and waders - good spectacle.

The Exmouth eel-grass beds again - 78 Pale-bellied Brents this am, with 25 juveniles in the flock. That's exceptionally high and really good news. Swans up to 69 yesterday. Not a duck in sight for the second day.

It's autumn! Brent Geese back early on the Exe Estuary, flock of 35 mainly Pale-bellied, + 60 Wigeon and 10 Pintail. 50 Mute Swans getting their share of the eel-grass beds before all the other Brents and Wigeon arrive!

Catching up - took ferry over to Starcross last week. Approx 160 Turnstones on old harbour wall, summer plumage nearly gone. Not as many as last year. Hot, sunny day & ferry going back to Exmouth was full to capacity, leaving some on the pier; many buckets and spades

A good day! A Wood Sandpiper graced us with its presence on Black Hole Marsh - bit late getting up - and real surprise with a Great White Egret coming onto the Axe in front of the Tower Hide remaining for about an hour. 12 Yellow Wagtails in Maer Valley with the cattle

Thanks to Derek C for this great photo of a juvenile Wheatear with adult on Orcombe this morning - a moment before it was asking for food, albeit rather half-heartedly. What a lovely day for everyone

Catching up with garden after being away for 2 weeks - Jersey Tiger moth landed on artificial grass and posed. First I've seen this year

Slowworms on the compost heap underneath a piece of old carpet; saw whole family some days ago with one adult slithering rapidly into a hole in the brickwork.

Hummingbird Hawkmoth feeding on the Kalmia flowers; the insects really do like this shrub.. Could see its proboscis going right into the individual flowers. Where are the Jersey Tigers?

On a glorious summer morning, NT uncut field of grasses and flowers by the Geoneedle was full of butterflies - mainly Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers but great to see was a healthy number of Marbled Whites
