Whether it is the spread rate via area burned or the spread rate via distance it travels/burns, 5.47 miles per minute is a other worldly number for even the world's worst wildfires. Not sure that has ever occurred before. If the latter, then it travels 330mph. UNREAL. #CampFire

That said... I'd wager if it really was traveling spread, at 330mph, we'd very likely have seen it make it to the ocean by now. In fact, that's definitely a fact (because air travel would show us this fact).

So, that would assert the notion that the fire department chose the wrong pairing there. Should've not emphasized lengths with the 80 fields, while specifically using the term "rate of spread". Definitely could have been worded FAR clearer.

Yeah, @CNN said it’s burning 80 football fields per minute. That’s false.

San Fran's main news also noted this metric - and it wasn't their words, it was straight from the fire department's spokesperson.

If it’s moving that fast I’m shocked more people aren’t being evacuated

Chico is currently under evac, according to the article I read.

I’ve heard parts. That town is huge. Over 90k I believe. I’m 45 miles away. I’d kinda like to know 😳

Not sure, but they were still noting how incredibly rapid the fire was spreading, and that the direction it shifted to (that puts Chico on it's course) was not expected. So, considering how they were treating it... I'd think they'd be trying to be safe and likely get all out.

Heck, Chico evacing at that population is made more ridiculous when you take into account the likely over 30k people that have there from evacing the canyon (which included what was Paradise)
