I am an employee at OkayAfrica and have been for close to 2 years now. My former colleagues, all Black women, have spoken out about their mistreatment at the company under the CEO, Abiola Oke. I stand with these Black women and their stories fully and the call for him to resign.
I’ve personally experienced a culture of fear and intimidation, of being singled out for speaking out especially when Black women have been unfairly treated and ultimately dismissed. I speak out for my colleague and friend @SenzeniMachogo who cannot do the same at this moment.
I, and other Black women, have been carrying our experiences in silence, struggling, committed to the work and afraid of losing our livelihoods. It takes courage to speak up + I commend @ivieani @AntoinetteIsama @kokothenut @ThatgirlXanan @ABisi123 @seenahgee @damoladurosomo.
For the men in this space who have written us all off as “disgruntled”, “petty” or “trying to bring another Black man down”—shame on you. Really, shame on you and your misogynistic “bro codes” that continue to harm Black women. We do not want to be in unity with you. Period.
