One of the takeaways from the recent pileons to Grace Lavery and Torrey Peters is that no trans person is allowed to indulge in irony or gallows humour or to write an unreliable narrator or anti-heroic protagonist without some vicious troll or Times columnist using it as a gotcha

"Vicious troll or Times columnist" feels a touch tautological

We're not even allowed to use metaphor. I used the word "hammer" as in "to argue vigorously". I'll give you three guesses how someone who is apparently an author and thus should understand metaphor clipped it out of context and screenshotted it over at Prosecco Stormfront.

I think this is hard to communicate to cis people. Trans people know that we will be willfully misinterpreted at the first opportunity. It makes me feel very cautious around cis people- scared to put a foot wrong.

Oh that’s so shit. The problem is there are some very vocal & vitriolic GC people on a mission, psyching others up and skewing it to make it look as if it is general. In fact you’ve got a lot of allies as well

Didn't one of the terves condemn Lolita, having unthinkingly assumed that the narrator was Nabokov talking?

Jeffreys, though more that she didn't get that nothing Humbert says is reliable and we're supposed to hate him.

I found NHS gender clinics and GPs don't have a sense of humour. Yes they can misinterpret and yes they can put the most prejudicial wild interpretation on the official record which you only discover later. It terrifies me to discuss *anything* trans related with them.

Gallows humor... like a form of fatalism?? Which is a form of humor many who have experienced trauma is some sort indulge in??? So the solution is to... give them more trauma?
