I say this as someone who loved HP growing up and I continue to love it in different ways as I grow in my understanding of social issues. But HP has always been full of racism, ableism, homophobia, fatphobia, transphobia... it’s all been there the whole time

And before anyone yells at me about it, I get a lot out of rereading and examining my biases and how HP shaped those. It sucks to find out something we love is harmful. It’s powerful to revisit (if you want to) and examine it with new eyes. Much love to everyone hurting.

Also not trying to shame anyone just realizing it now. If you're noticing now, it means you've changed and grown. That'a good thing! Keep examining that. You might have missed it in a lot of your favs. It sucks to realize it, but also it means you're doing the work. Keep working.

Yeah, I’ve reread some of the hp books recently and the way she described Dudley is appalling

Yeah, everything that she's bigoted about on Twitter now shows up in the Harry Potter books themselves. Even the transphobia is in there. I think maybe a lot of people have fondness for the books from childhood but haven't actually read them since childhood

Yeah the transphobia JUMPS OUT with Rita Skeeter too
