It will be fascinating to learn why a Chinese navy task group, likely with PLA marines embarked, is in Sydney. Any claim they are just on their way home from the Gulf of Aden makes no sense. This looks like a serious show of presence in the South Pacifichttps://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/chinese-warships-arrive-in-sydney-harbour-for-stopover-20190603-p51ttw.html …

This visit was planned in April 2019. The Liberal Government, which likely thought it was going to lose the federal election in May, did not make an announcement. Perhaps hoping timing of the visit would reflect badly on an incoming Labor Government?

Woefully inadequate statement by @ScottMorrisonMP: '...the arrival of three Chinese warships into Sydney Harbour is a “reciprocal visit”. The timing of the dramatic display of the People’s Liberation Army’s naval power was 'subject to a bit of overanalysis.'

Gunboat diplomacy, I’m thinking. And believe me , the Chinese know a bit about this. I don’t think I need to add any further comment.
