One year visas?! You do realise that immigrants are human beings, not just robotic units of production, right? You do understand that when they go to a new country they're going to want to build a life there, not face getting arbitrarily kicked out after 12 months, right?

Completely disagree about using short term staff for this work. It is highly skilled, difficult work. People needing care have complex needs. You can always find volunteers to do shopping but trying to persuade someone with dementia to eat, or cleaning up incontinence?

Please remember that adult social care isn't just about older people. There are very many younger sick and disabled adults like me, who also need care.

And no policy aimed at reforming social care will work until it recognises that more than half of the local councils spend on adult social care goes to people aged under 65

Rory, this is one of several issues that should not have anything to do with party politics but should be protected items because they are in the national interest. I’d rather all parties agreed one way forward on a host of issues and ringfences those as a sacrosanct

It’s a really tough one. Problem is if you take an issue away from party politics you remove it from democratic accountability as well. If a detached commission sets the policy, what do we do if we don’t think its acceptable? How can we get them to change it? No easy answer.

"The carer had only 15 minutes per client." The word that sticks out for me as emblematic of the problem is "client."
-
My mum would want to welcome her carer into her house, make tea for her etc -which would take all of the 15 minutes... If this offer of hospitality was rejected, she felt hurt and distressed for the rest of the day. As for her hygiene - it was difficult to address.
