Because border security is regularly conflated with border militarization. The right doesn't care for it to be secure: the most secure border wouldn't need a wall.
The question about border security in this debate presupposed that the border is insecure. We're at 1970s-level illegal crossing and U.S. border cities are among the safest in the country.
