Twitter literally did exactly this with their new UI update. Are these companies seriously too cheap to have a PC UI vs a tablet or phone UI?
I think it's a bit more sinister than that. They just want it to fit the form factor of a phone just in case the phone is using the browser instead of the app, and just in case the phone doesn't auto-direct to the mobile version of the site for whatever reason.

Phone master race, apparently. Tho I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of users access twitter from a phone/tablet. I get it but I don’t like it. Also as someone who quit Facebook in 2017 and just came back (temporarily!) I find the UI almost unusable now
