Other than the obvious "We only care about mobile users and smart TVs" mentality every major tech company has now, I feel like this directly plays to corporate desire to chisel away at your choices to get the maximum number of people to engage with the minimum range of things.

I actually think it looks pretty snazzy and cant wait for it to hit me. Finally, a use for all that blank space. No more squinting to see what the heck is going on in a thumbnail!

While I don't want to exclude anyone with bad vision, I really don't see how anyone with normal vision would have a hard time seeing thumbnails unless they are terribly designed. Not to mention that's the purpose of the title - to tell you what the video is about.
