Dogged reporting by @motherboard and @nytimes revealed that this was just the tip of the iceberg and that stalkers, rogue sheriff’s deputies, and shady data brokers had used this massive loophole to track Americans without their permission or knowledge.
Thanks to an outcry from consumers, last year the big wireless companies finally stopped allowing shady data brokers to track their customers. I’m eager to see whether the FCC will truly hold wireless companies accountable, or let them off with a slap on the wrist.
That there aren’t strict federal limits on cell phone carrier and ISP use of customer data is an absolute horror

Thank you for being one of the few in congress paying attention to these issues. Selling this type of data isn’t just an ad hoc issue—it will be used to train AI systems which is particularly problematic in relation to the prison-industrial system in this country.

Senator Wyden, Thank you. The telecom providers violated trust. When telecoms sell our private information, we (the public) need to be notified. The company should email us. Since it is our info, we should be financially compensated.
