  1. “I cannot stress enough how little there is to do when you have confined yourself to the inside of a small circle of stones and sticks in a forest. But it is an instructive kind of boredom, insofar as boredom is the raw and unmediated experience of time.”

  2. “A ban on facial recognition won't make any difference if, in response, surveillance systems switch to identifying people by smartphone MAC addresses. The problem is that we are being identified without our knowledge or consent…”—

  3. I’m old enough to remember when Steve Englehart’s Coyote made a guest appearance in ’s Badger. Or maybe it was the other way around. Or it could have been both, in a two-part story. Look, I didn’t say I remembered it WELL.

Just in case you're starting to think seriously about - talk to any police reform activist in NYC, where he spent 12 years fighting tooth and nail against ANY effort to rein in racist cops or hold them accountable for murders of unarmed civilians.

  5. Most of us are capable of distinguishing between people with strong beliefs that merely differ from ours and assholes, and cutting assholes out of our lives as much as we can. If you find someone here who can’t, and you don’t want to get caught up in the bullshit they attract…👍

  6. Me, I love the idea of blockchains, although to be honest it’s way too much effort to keep track of whether you people can tell the difference between good and evil, or you’re following evil out of “professional courtesy.” If I find out about it, though, yeah, you’re cut off.

  7. My dad took me to STALAG 17 when I was seven or eight. To be honest, I don’t remember much about it. And then later that year my mom took me to see THE CHOIRBOYS, but technically I was supposed to be asleep in the back of the station wagon.

This is a good story. Nearly every successful author has their story of the work they did to keep the lights on and food in the fridge and the door open to more work down the road. All work has value, even if it's not the work you always thought you'd be doing. Keep at it.

This is a very good point, but there’s another question to ask. If someone’s that deep in gun fetishism, are we sure there even IS a difference? Why should we assume, when our lives are at stake, that the guy on the left won’t next week simply become the man on the right?

  17. I don't have much to say about American Dirt, but I *can* pull back the curtain and tell you about the process by which ambitious-yet-insecure publishing houses can drive the cost of acquiring a novel up to $1,000,000 or more. Here's my latest newsletter.

This is the essence of The Grand Inquisitor chapter of The Brothers Karamazov, which is a damning indictment of Trump-supporting Christians written 140 years ago.
