Has anyone done a comparison of the same infant study with parents’ eyes open or closed? Or earmuffs/headphones vs not? Maybe ManyBabies?

One of my wonderful PhD students, Ghanimat Azdahri, was on the plane that crashed in Tehran this morning. Ghanimat was on her way back to after visiting her family and traditional Indigenous territories in Iran over the December break. The students and I are in so much pain

Do you know of good, non-academic, accessible (non-paywalled) articles on developmental psychology and/or language acquisition that are aimed at parents of young kids?

At the incredible BCCCD, reminded that Orban doesn’t know what he’s losing by destroying Hungarian academic freedom and you should too

It’s the season for grad school interviews. I’ve been doing these a couple years now (for a few different programs), and in the interest of dismantling the hidden curriculum, here’s how I’d interview you and what I’d look for: 1/

So, if you can flyless, eat vegetarian, take public transport, and otherwise reduce your carbon footprint, do it! I know I try my best. But be aware that we all have limited bandwidths, and be careful what you advocate onto others. Collective political action remains the key. 3/

In an ideal world there is a positive marginal benefit to reducing individual carbon footprints. But only if it does not take away time, mental-bandwidth, money from supporting collective action, and if doesn't lull you into a false sense of accomplishment. Which it does. 2/

Individual action, personal carbon footprint, . Good rule of thumb: if BP wants you to focus on it, don't. Good rule of thumb: spend your time, bandwidth, & money on what BP hates: they were the largest donor against WA Carbon Tax ($13 mil). Collective action, folks

People like to tell junior faculty not to overwork because of pressure to get tenure. It's my second year, I really don't think about tenure much. I overwork because of a deep fear of letting down students/collaborators/editors/literally anyone

Can you make someone give more to charity by reasoning with them? In other words, can good arguments change moral behavior? If you can do it, and I would like to pay you. You write an argument, we’ll do the study, biggest effect wins. Details:

I'd guess that a lot of prospective students are much stronger candidates than what I can judge from their statements. If they don't have a mentor they feel comfortable going to, is there a resource I can point them to instead?

There's no way to know what a statement should look like without a lot of advice and mentorship. My first draft would've gone straight into my current self's trash. But I was lucky and had mentors to show it to. They told me to start from scratch and showed me how.

I get a lot of emails from students (especially foreign students) whose statements miss the mark. E.g. statements that just propose a specific study, or talk about their childhood history of interest in psych. It's not their fault!

What's your favorite resource for prospective grad students on how to write a good statement of purpose?
