    1. पा = पीना, सोखना, एक साँस में चूस लेना 2. धुँआँ भी पिया जाता है would definitely have more reasons.

    आयुर्वेद में धूम्र या धुआँएक सेवनीय औषधि है जिसके परमाणु सूक्षतम होते हैं (रोग रक्षक धूप, अग्निहोत्र का धूम्र, गुग्गुल का धूम्र) जो स्थान के निर्जंतुकीकरण (sterilisation) के लिए प्रयोग किए जाते हैं। धूम्र का ‘सेवन’ होता है,सेवनीय खाया या पिया जाता है, अतः धूम्रपान = सिगरेट ‘पीना’

    धूमपानम् is Ayurvedic procedure to get rid of facial congestion esp in nose region occurring due to kaphavruddhi. Patient wl b asked to smoke medicated cigarette to remove that congestion. While smoking dhūma will enter inside our body thru mouth which is called paanam.

    Makes sense! I thought it had something to do with the smoke traveling through hookah water. But yes, air, wind, smoke as a liquid in general makes more sense.

    It is the same in tamiZ also- bIDi kuDikkaradu* for smoking a bIdi/ cigarette kuDi means drink (verb and noun)

    and also wind, air e.g. in language shaa iskàa, literally ‘drink wind’, means ‘go for a stroll’. Compare Hindi हवा खाना (havā khānā = eat air !!). Even in English, e.g. in poetry of Alfred Edward Housman (1859-1939): ''I pace the earth, and drink the air, and feel the sun"

    On why Hindi/Urdu uses same verb for drinking & smoking पीना pīnā? In several world lgs verbs of eating & drinking is extended to the intake of something physical, but not food or drink into the body. A common extension involves their use in expressions for smoking cigarettes...

    Veervaar is used in Hindi & Dogri also I am not sure but probably Veer refers to strongest/ most powerful pointing towards Brihaspati as most powerful Grahas In North India we have tradition if preparing yellow/saffron colored sweet rice on this day
