An even stronger parallel between the blacklist and this thread is how both involved activist communities (led by former FBI agents) who used accusations of treasonous collusion with the Russians to demand that institutions purge the opposition.

It reminds me a bit of how during the Hollywood Blacklist anti-communist activists would be aggressive and sometimes sloppy in their accusations but the studios had an internal "clearance" system which could be pretty rigorous.
