My latest book is on Poland’s September Campaign of 1939. “First to Fight” in the UK “Poland 1939” in the US, & “Polska 1939” in Poland. It won the Polish Foreign Ministry History Prize 2020, and was shortlisted for the Wellington History Medal. Enjoy!

Why would the Chinese authorities not want an investigation into the origins of the virus? What could they possibly have to hide?

  3. Out walking the dog and hugely enjoying ‘s podcast on the Battle of Brunanburh - part of his “Love Letter to the British Isles” series. Excellent listening. Appropriately, the dog is investigating Grimm’s Ditch...

Attention English uni students! I know some people aren't getting enough feedback from tutors at the moment, and I wanted to say feel free to get in touch if you want a quick tutorial over Zoom or feedback on an essay. I used to tutor A-Level/degree and I really miss it!

I am not sure how it can be any clearer: the Chinese Regime is simply murderous, corrupt and totalitarian. At the very least we need to accept HKers for political asylum. Money clearly talks, given the slave labour used to produce goods for our markets. There is no morality here.

This is shameful behaviour by Beijing’s rulers. Failure to investigate and to use the world’s experts puts everyone at risk of a repeat and particularly those who are closest - the Chinese people.

Yes, it’s very important now that the citizenry are locked in their homes that their reading and viewing should also be restricted. No non-approved views permitted. What could possibly go wrong?

5 January 1919. The German Workers’ Party (DAP), led by Anton Drexler (pictured) was founded in Munich, Germany. Its chief aim was to win over the masses from socialism by stressing nationalism. It was this party that became the Nazi Party in February 1920.

Ever wonder how someone could be a guard in Auschwitz or an arctic gulag camp, and yet accept it as a virtuous task? Because a certain percent of any population will believe anything they are told, no matter how fantastic or murderous it is, as long as it fits their worldview.
