What a difference 7 years can make! The image on the left shows the on 31 Oct 2012, just a few months after it arrived on Mars. The image on the right was taken nearly 7 years later, on 11 October 2019. The poor rover looks like it's been through a lot! 1/

I've always loved how preposterous the Delta IV Heavy looks. It looks like something a kid would draw turned into real life. And then it goes and sets itself on fire before it launches. Delta IV Heavy launches are just such a great show. Credit: ULA

The Russian Polyus spacecraft strapped to a Energia rocket. The Polyus was a prototype orbital weapons platform designed to destroy satellites with a megawatt carbon-dioxide laser. It was launched on May 15, 1987 and would ultimately fail to reach orbit.

This program suffered from the start with unrealistic costs and unrealistic operational cost models. I am not terribly surprised by the outcome.

We‘ve had that so many times before. Look at the 2006 HLV program, for example - looks just like Phantom Express. Promises are made, money is received, nice concept art is made, and the program is cancelled a few years later.

It seems the bright dot (the missile) dims a little around 9 seconds after launch. But afaik, Tor has a 4 s boost and a 12 s cruise phase burn, which should seem considerably dimmer than the boost. Do we know yet that it was a Tor system?

Iran has admitted to mistakenly shooting down Ukraine Internatioal Airlines Flight 752. The plane was flying near sensitive Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facilities just hours after the IRGC launched an attack on coalition forces in Iraq.

Tragic. It took some time, but at least Iran admits it instead of denying forever that mistakes were made. Perhaps public pressure from open source analyses played a part.

Not sure if a jet engine burns that brightly due to “technical failure”. Any aviation experts here? Let’s hope it’s not another MH17. Air defense officers surely were nervous this night.

This boils down to around 75% reliability. Not good, but along the lines of what to expect for indigenous production with limited experience (yes, I say limited, compared to Russia or USA).
