Polyus was meant to turn 180 degrees and fire its engines to raise its orbit after Energia released it. But after it turned 180 degrees, it kept turning until it was backwards. Then it fired its engines and brought itself down. It was stowed upside down in the black fairing.

Interesting marking on the side of Polyus: "Mir" meaning "Peace"..

I had heard that this center piece was intended to be the core of the MIR 2 station, and they did not change it once it was used for Polyuz. However I rather think they kept the writing to mislead Western observers.
