I wonder if Expensify SmartScan users know MTurk workers enter their receipts. I’m looking at someone’s Uber receipt with their full name, pick up, and drop off addresses.

To add to this, I checked out their reviews from MTurk workers. They reject a lot of submitted work, don’t pay workers, and workers can’t get a reply from the company when asking for help/support.

I wonder how many of the people here learning about Expensify SmartScan using MTurk are also users of other receipt apps like Ibotta, Receipt Hog, Snap Save, etc. They also all use MTurk.

So Expensify wants users to find their own human MTurk workers or find people who can get approved to be an MTurk worker (which Amazon says is a proprietary criteria and they reject tons of applicants), and then use these workers of your own to do your receipt data entry. 🤔 https://twitter.com/expensify/status/934446277072482309 …

I’ve also read that CloudFactory is involved with doing Expensify receipts.https://mixergy.com/interviews/cloudfactory-with-mark-sears/ …

My other thought is that Expensify may be using MTurk to train/verify their OCR systems, but still don’t know how their users would feel about their receipts and info being displayed to MTurk workers.

Was the PII redacted or were you seeing names and masked credit card numbers?

VSI Production doesn't cover up any info either, but no idea who they process receipts for.

I don’t believe any of the receipt tasks (Ibotta, InfoScout, Checkout51, etc.) redact or cover any user info.

Regarding privacy I don't worry so much about workers who manually enter receipts. Much worse if purchase data is being systematically sold via data brokers. Don't know about Expensify, but e.g. Ibotta's data is for sale at Acxiom/LiveRamp's "data store": https://lp.liveramp.com/IdentityLinkDataStoreWebinar_Recording.html …pic.twitter.com/PQI5nWTaoW

Does it explicitly say "Expensify" somewhere? Last I heard, they'd moved from Mturk to in-house people for reading receipts.

Yup, the tasks are hosted on http://expensify.com  and the requester’s name is Expensify Infra.

They’re no longer posted. There’s no way to know if the workers did them all or if Expensify removed them.

A service owned by Amazon where anyone with data entry or small jobs can post tasks. Internet uses can sign up as workers, pick up jobs that look interesting, do the work, and get paid. http://mturk.com
