Back in 2003, John Kerry had a meeting with Ralph Nader, in which Nader gave him 20 pages of issues he felt were really important, and told Kerry that if he picked three to adopt in his campaign, he wouldn't run in that election.

And, you know, people love to blame Nader for shit, assuming that those who voted for him would have otherwise voted for Democrats if he hadn't run, but Kerry clearly felt that he did not need those votes to win. You think he would have learned something from that.

Is there any source on that meeting? I remember tons of meetings like that about dropping out of the race, but only in 2004, and I'm not finding anything right now

The Green party + Left-Independent (Nader) vote was pretty insignificant in 2004. There isn't really a lesson here other than that the left regrouped the best they could after 2000. 2004 was lost for other reasons. . . . like rampant anti-LGBTQ bigotry.

Apart from the obvious that Gore/Bush was swingable by Nader votes and Bush/Kerry was not...if the argument is that no Nader voters would have otherwise supported Gore then the implication is that Democrats shouldn't spend any effort chasing Naderites/Stieniacs.

Wait, you're blaming Kerry for that?
I am the last person to defend him, but the truth is, he did win. I hate his guts for choosing not to fight for it. But not taking orders from Nader? My opinion of him just ticked up a little. -
Three issues. He could have supported three issues that were really important to people, out of many, many issues. He basically said "fuck them, I don't care, I don't need their votes anyway."
