Feb 15, 1932: death of Ben Salmon, a Catholic CO from Denver who refused to serve in army during WWI. There being no provision for Catholic conscientious objectors, he was sentenced to death, reduced to 24 years. He fasted and was force-fed in prison until his release in 1920.

Salmon, in prison, wrote a 200pp ms. critiquing the church's just war teaching and justifying his commitment to gospel nonviolence. He was denounced as a heretic and a traitor, "Denver's yellowist draft dodger." He cited early Christians who offered witness vs idolatry of Empire.

I appreciate this memorial about my father by @ggrenwald above any I have read today--for his comprehensive review of his bio & history, for his attention to themes generally overlooked about his post-Vietnam life, but particularly for deep appreciation of his human qualities.🙏
