The annals of women saints are marked by countless examples of those who cleared a new path, apart from the choices dictated by church or society. Later honored—but often in their lives scorned or chastened by men who claimed their sacred desires conflicted with the will of God.
Sister Baudelia Duque Belloso comes to mind. She was murdered by the Spanish Army during their civil war for now disavowing her beliefs. She has been beautified, but not yet a Saint.
