On Dec 29 1890 nearly 300 Lakota people were massacred by U.S. Calvary at Wounded Knee. Black Elk, a Lakota holy man, was a survivor of the massacre.

He wrote, “A people’s dream died there... It was a beautiful dream...the nation’s hoop is broken and scattered. There is no center any longer, and the sacred tree is dead.” Later he became a Catholic catechist, now candidate for canonization.

He is the poet laureate of Nebraska - in perpetuity. I visited the state historic site at Bancroft NE where they have a small museum and have preserved the one room shed that he used as a studio from 1900 till 1920.
