German theologian Johann Baptist Metz died last year 12/2 2019. His theology was crucially shaped by need to account for the failure of Christians to respond adequately to Hitler. His post-Auschwitz theology took account not only of the suffering of Jews but silence of Christians
Conversation
“The Christian is not only responsible for what he does or fails to do, but also for what he allows to happen to others.”—JB Metz.

“The dead of Auschwitz should have brought upon us a total transformation; nothing should have been allowed to remain as it was, neither among our people nor in our churches. Above all, not in the churches.” — Johann Baptist Metz

He is/was amazing. Read Poverty of Spirit - simply an amazing series of insights into the real sacrifices Christ calls us to make. No trite language here. Not a wasted word.

Like the failure of Christians to respond "adequately" to Trumpism. Some things don't change.
